Join SustainUS in engaging with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
The CBD was established in 1993 with 3 main objectives:
- The conservation of biological diversity
- The sustainable use of the components of biological diversity
- The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources
This year, 2010, is a biodiversity target year. In 2002, parties committed themselves to “achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on Earth.” The negotiating parties will be working to create a text on Access and Benefit-Sharing at the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The convention will take place from October 18-29, 2010 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. For more information, check out the CBD website at http://www.cbd.int/cop10/.
